There is a lot of insect life going on in this humid climate. I thought that I would just share some of the interesting bugs that I have to deal with daily! This doesn't even count the ants that are coming from the apartment next door into the boys room.
I have never captured a photo of a live cockroach at our house. I stole this one from photobucket. But I can guarantee you we have lots of these guys running around my house. This is just a part of life in Hawaii. Everyone has cockroaches.
Here is the giant moth that was hanging out on our front screen all day. You can't really tell from this picture, but this thing is huge!
This is one of 3 almost transparent lizards that live in and around our back porch. One time we saw them fighting (or having sex?) and one lizard had the head of another almost entirely in his mouth. Gross! We also have a bright green gecko who lives in our back yard.
This beetle type bug has yet to be indentified. Don't worry though, I killed him. Collin hates when I kill bugs. They are his friends, he says.
Darrell was talking about this centipede type bug to a guy at work. Turns out that it's really poisonous. I just scooped it up with a dustpan and threw it outside. I could have died!! Ok, at least gone to the hospital.
I posted this gigantic furry fly before. I seen them all the time now. Really gross! Always remember to keep the screens shut.

World Champion Swimmer
Collin begs to take a bath almost every day. I beg he keeps more water in the tub than out. He loves his "swimming glasses" and he practices holding his breath.
Myself, I am not much of a swimmer. I don't prefer getting wet. I am more of a lay out and get a tan kind of girl. I like doing water sports like jet skis and boating things, but just swimming has never really appealed to me. That's the only thing keeping me back from doing a Tri like Anna-Marie and Brooke. Ha ha! LOL!
Anyway here are some pictures of my little fish. I don't care if he hates me for putting his little tush on the World Wide Web. I am a mom. It's my right to embarrass my children.

Sick Baby
Brody woke up this morning and was warm all over. I took his temp and it was 101.9 so I guess that means a change of plans.
Today was supposed to go like this. Take a quick run at the gym (Daycare doesn't start until 8am), shower, Storytime at the library at 10:30, Go to the beach, lunch and nap, go to the city (Kahului where all the stores are) for grocery shopping, Darrell gets home from work early today so do something fun with him, Dinner, bedtime.
I am a planner. What can I say?
Now my day will go like this: eat breakfast, hold the baby, cater to the babys every need, hold the baby, give the baby a bottle, hold the baby, baby FINALLY takes a nap, if I'm lucky he's feeling better after his nap and we can run to the grocery store that's close by and get some milk, go home and hold the baby, dinner, bedtime.
That's how it goes when you're a mama. You never know exactly how your day will go. Kids change from day to day and you never know what to expect. At least we didn't have anything important to do. Oh well. I hope it's a 24 hour bug and he is feeling better very quickly.

Freak Out!
So Darrell doesn't love his new job. Wouldn't be such a problem, but we are sort of committed now. Hawaii is sort of a big deal. I don't really know how I feel about the whole thing. I don't love Hawaii like I thought I would. Mostly I feel like I am camping, always sweating, dirty, and getting bit by bugs. Don't even get me started on the bugs. That will be in a blog to come soon.
We just need to find "The Job" for Darrell so that we can live in one place and try to be normal. Darrell has been in contact with Bodell Construction, the company that he worked for last. They have some work coming up soon. The reason he left them is they were about to lay everybody off. He actually really liked working for them, just they ran out of work and we couldn't wait around for a few months. Bills, gotta love 'em.
Anyway he kind of wants to go back to school, but we really need to be out of debt. Credit cards and hospital bills. I hate being a grown up. Anyway that is probably about a year away. Darrell could realistically start school next spring. He wouldn't need to go to school though if he could find "The Job." (Back to that.) He could just do some part time school or even one class at a time if he found the right job. He does want to get a degree, but it isn't as important in his field as other fields of work. He has a lot of experience and good supervise experience. Anyway we will see what the next month brings. I might be back in Utah by June. Who knows!?!?!?

Sleeping angels
I always used to ask the question: Why do kids look so much bigger when they are asleep?
My mom had a great answer to that: It's the only time of day you can see all of them at once.
It's true, kids are always running around in a whirlwind of sticky food, toys, and dirt. I love watching my kids sleep. They look so angelic and peaceful.
Darrell and I used to watch Collin sleep every night right before we went to bed. We would check on him and just stay in there for like 20 minutes. It was fun. With Brody, he has been such a light sleeper until lately that we haven't been able to sneak in and take a peek. He would always sit right up when I would open his door. Now he is sleeping heavier so I get to look at him now. They are just so beautiful when they are asleep.

Squished!
Brody sleeps all over the place. Everytime I check on him he is in a different position. He gets it from Darrell. Last night this naughty little boy didn't go to bed until 10pm! I thought I was going to lose my mind.
He is sleeping on about 1/4 of his bed. I just couldn't resist taking these pictures.
I had to post all 3 pictures that I took just so you could get all the angles. I just can't understand how this could be comfortable at all. Kids are funny I guess.
Lucky for him he went to bed on time tonight!!
My Hot Barbecue Man
The Monster Green Bookcase
I really like free stuff, so when I was buying a dresser and the girl offered me a beat up bookcase for free I jumped on the chance! :)
I let Collin pick the color and help paint it. I was really trying to push him into a blue or red color, but he wasn't having it. So green it is.
Then we are putting stickers on the side. We don't have enough yet, but we have a good start. Collin loved it. It's his own book shelf and that makes it special.

The Best 150 Calories of My Day
I have the exercise thing down now, so the next battle is eating better. I actually don't eat terrible, but I don't eat all the fruits and veggies that I need to. Carbs are my friend. I lost a few pounds right before Christmas by doing this online calorie tracking. Darrell was doing it with me, which makes it about 1,000 times easier. Well the last few months have been crazy for us - Christmas, moving, etc. so now I am starting over again.
I have a true love for Dr. Pepper though. It's my biggest vice. I have stopped drinking it off and on for years and years. I have been drinking cans of Dr. Pepper lately, hence the title of this blog - they are 150 calories. The gas stations here don't really have a variety of sodas so I can't buy my Diet Dr. Pepper cocktail. It consists of about 3/4 diet Dr. Pepper and 1/4 of the real stuff. Delicious! I am down to 1 can a day though. That's not bad. I am about ready to switch to diet though.
I don't think Darrell will be too happy with that. He hasn't had a Mountain Dew to drink for months, but he has been stealing The Nectar of the Gods (a.k.a. Dr Pepper) from me. I really don't think that he will drink the diet though. Ha ha!
One great thing about living in Hawaii is that there are not many fast food places. Taco Bell is in a shopping center without a drive through. Not really worth unloading the munchkins for a Nachos Bell Grande. Plus the food is really expensive. Count on paying $8+ for a value meal at McDonalds. This makes it a lot less tempting to go to these places.
By the way if anyone has any yummy, healthy recipes let me know.
Kymberly is here
Audra had her baby girl today. Kymberly Rose born at 6:05 pm weighed in at 7 pounds 11 ounces. Everyone is doing well. Now my mom has 4 grandbabies - 2 of each. I guess I make the boys and Audra makes the girls. I would love to have a boy cousin though. My boys have 9 girl cousins (both sides) and 0 boy cousins. I can't wait for Amber to have a boy!!

Alone
Right now both kids are asleep and Darrell is still at work. I love being alone. It's not something that happens very often and I cherish every minute of it. I did some cleaning and even that is more enjoyable when you don't have any "helpers" picking cereal out of your nicely swept dirt pile. I swept, mopped, did the dishes (should have been done last night), put lots of toys away, and started some laundry. Now I think I will go read my book and see if Oprah is on. When was the last time I watched Oprah.......hmmm....can't remember. Darrell hates Oprah! Ha ha! Anyway I am going to go enjoy some peace and quiet for about another half hour or so.

What I meant to say....
So yesterdays blog was all over the place, I know. I think that the moral of the story was just enjoy what you DO have and don't worry about what you don't.
Who cares if I am living in a tiny 2 bedroom condo. Who cares if I have too many bills. Who cares if I am crazy person sometimes. :) I am in Hawaii! I have the best 2 kids ever. I have a great husband. I have been to so many places and seen so many things in my life. I am blessed.
And yes, I still want to be normal. I want a house and the whole picket fence thing, but that doesn't need to be on my mind ALL the time. Enjoy now.
A counselor at SUU had a quote that I liked: "Be here now." Her lesson was don't worry about boys while you are doing your homework and don't worry about homework while you are out with a boy. Makes sense. Focus and have fun!

Slow down! This ain't the Mainland!
This is a bumper sticker that you will see all over the island. My neighbor has it and I was going to take a picture of it, but she was gone when I went out to do it. Maybe I will add it later.
I had kind of an interesting talk today at, of all places, play group. This woman that I really hadn't had a chance to talk to yet just started chatting with me. She pretty much skipped over all the usual chit chat and went straight for the jugular. (Just something I felt like saying. LOL)
She started talking about the story in the BOM about the olive branch and the grafting and all that business. She was saying that the people of the islands of the pacific were a branch that needed to be grafted back in and it was our responsibility to do so. Funny how it wasn't offensive or bizarre to me, but actually she came across very lovingly, but serious. Why me? What do you want from me?
The she started telling me about the first time she came to the islands. She is white - I actually can't tell what race she is, because she is on the big side like a Tongan woman with a big flat nose, but her skin is white and she has prettier features. Anyway, she married a Tongan man and he wanted to move back to Hawaii. She was from Idaho so it was all new to her.
Same as me she almost had a melt down when she saw the sizes of houses people lived in, no yards, etc. She got used to it pretty quickly. She said that the Tongan people as a whole don't think a lot about the future. They are just content with day to day things and they don't worry if they are going to buy a house in 3 years or a new car in a year or plan the rest of their lives out (like I try to do sometimes) or things like that. They just do things day by day and just take what life gives them. They just accept what comes their way.
Well for me this is amazing. My life is a bit out of control, but I always like to plan and project what will happen. She said if she knew how her life was going to turn out 10 years ago she would have just laughed and not believed it. I felt exactly the same. If you told me when I first got married that this is where I would be with 2 kids and the whole bit, there is no way that I would have believed it. I would love to just let things go and not worry about things so much.
So my brother just called and then as soon as I got off the phone with him then my mom called. I sort of lost my train of thought and now I am not in the mood. Maybe I will continue this later.

Toddlers and Naps
The reason that toddlers take naps is not scientific or psychological. Some people (who don't have children) might say that it's time that they are growing or developing their brain or they are just exhausted from playing so hard or other such nonsense. All of these are valid points, but all of them are wrong.
Do you want to know the real reason that toddlers take naps? It's simple:
TODDLERS TAKE NAPS SO THEIR MOTHERS DON'T KILL THEM.
On that same note, it's 1:15pm and Brody has still not gone to sleep after 2 attempts. I guess I better go get him up. His normal nap time is about 11 am.

Once Upon a Time There Was a Ninja
We did a creative writing exercise the other day. Collin had to write a story and then color the pictures that went with the story. It was really fun to hear all his ideas. This was the first story he wrote:
The rest of the story went like this:
"He lived in a place called Warriors."
"The ninja sees a bear."
"The ninja makes an invention."
"The ninja and the bear became friends."
That's it. I guess the invention is what made them become friends. Like a friend making machine? I thought I would spare you the pictures of the other pages, because he didn't color much on them. He really hates coloring. I think it's a great story. Don't you?

My Buddy Brody
As you might know Collin is a mama's boy. He has always liked me over Darrell to the point that it kind of hurt Darrell's feelings that Collin didn't ever want him. I guess I am just so wonderful. :)
Well with Brody it has been the complete opposite. Brody likes me alright, but he would prefer Darrell or my mom or any other male figure (Grandpa, uncles, etc.) over me. I always would tell Darrell to not let it hurt his feelings, but now I can see how upsetting it is.
Lately though I have been his #1. I have really enjoyed spending one on one time with him, playing, reading, singing songs, body slamming, and all those other fun mom things. Maybe it's just that Collin is more independent now so Brody can actually spend time with me when Collin isn't all over me. I don't know.
All I can say is that I have really enjoyed Brody these last few weeks. He has even gone to me over Darrell and I am telling you that NEVER happens! He's my sweetheart who gives me booger kisses.

You know you're tired when.....
A Tribute to Edna Jean
She would murder me if she knew I called her that. That's my Grandma Ward, and she only goes by Jean. Don't even bring up Edna unless you have a half hour to waste listening to her talk about "What a terrible name" or "How can you name a child that" etc........
Anyway that's not what this blog is about. I just want to share with you some funny and extremely bizarre songs/poems that she taught my dad and he shared with me growing up.
Here's a classic:
"There's a soldier in the grass with a bullet in his
Don't be alarmed
It's only in his arm."
And then there's"
"The Slithereedee crawled out of the sea.
He may catch the others,
but he won't.........."
And then this is the only part that I remember of this one:
"She's got freckles on her butt -She's nice."
I don't get that one.
Anyway this is the sort of crazy that I come from. Are these your typical children's songs? No, but that's my family for you. I would say to share these with your children, but I wouldn't if I was you. They might turn out like me! :)

Why do you move around so much?
I know it sounds like we are crazy because we move around so much. Well the answer is even crazier! Darrell worked for a company that built domes. Yes, domes. Dome Technology is the name of the company. (Kudos for creativity.) Their type of building was so specific that only a handful of companies could build what they did. Here are a few photos of what the projects look like when they are done. I know it hard to imagine what a dome would look like, so I am making it easy.
This is a church in Albuquerque. The front two buildings were already there. They built the dome and some other small outer buildings that you can't see. This was the first dome that they had ever done this color. It was more of a copper color.
Here is a link to the last project that Darrell did with Dome Technology. It is an indoor waterpark for a Holiday in Maumee, Ohio, near Toledo.

This was an auditorium for a small college in Gainesville, Texas. There were classrooms and other rooms inside. It was a huge controversy because the law was that no building could be taller than the courthouse. Funny huh!

Darrell did that last project and he quit to work with Bodell Construction in Vernal in February of last year. That was working out fine, but the work was slowing down and there were talks of being laid off. (Not something to wait around for.) So we found this Maui job and headed here in February, well, Darrell got here in January. Now he is working on a large condo project.
So there you have it. That's why we moved around so much. Domes, domes, domes. Each project lasted 3-9 months. Crazy. I am glad that's over. No way could I do that with 2 kids.

Gym - 2, Gel - 0
So I have started back to the gym. It's actually my second week, but let's forget last week all together! There were play groups and preschool meetings and anyway I started over this week.
So yesterday I take the kids in and Brody is crying and will not stop. I guess crying is an understatement, because I could still hear him all the way across the gym and the kids room door was shut. Well I told the sweet daycare girl that I would be back in 10 minutes and see if he has stopped. Well I ran and came back and he was still screaming 10 minutes later so I guess I had to go. Dang! Just getting everyone ready and to the gym is half the battle. Oh well. I am pretty sure he wasn't feeling well so it would be selfish to make him try to stay.
So then we try again today. The daycare gal that actually plays with the kids was working today. She is really nice and Collin likes her. They were playing some Madagascar game and I guess Collin just got so into it that he peed his pants. I think that he was just trying to hold it because he was having too much fun to go to the bathroom. He actually hasn't had an accident since he was potty trained so this is actually extremely unusual for him. So the gal came and got me. I was thinking that Brody was crying again, but it was an entirely different problem. I actually was just finishing a good 30 minute run and I still needed to cool down, but I guess I had to count rounding up the kids and walking to the car as my cool down today. I was a sweaty mess. Oh well , at least I got my run it. I can't complain about that. Just 2 days without a complete workout.
It has been so much harder to get back to the gym with 2 kids than it ever was with just 1. I started going to the gym when Collin was about 7 months old. I gained about 45 pounds with Collin, but I was living in la-la land and I thought the weight would just fall off. I know 45 pounds is a lot, but when you know I had a 9 pound baby you can see why I was so big. I really thought I would go right back to my normal weight in about 3-4 months. Ha! Boy was I an idiot. So when Collin turned 7 months I decided not much was going to change unless I hit the gym. I started going and I really didn't know what I was doing. It was an all women's gym, which I loved, and the teachers were very informative. I was going 5-6 times a week and loving it. It was "Me" time. I could just clear my head, get healthy, and not have to think about changing diapers for one hour every day.
I went to that gym for about 6 months and then we moved. I was able to find gyms everywhere we went and I really enjoyed it. I actually was going to the gym 4 times a week when I was pregnant with Brody. The last month of my pregnancy I was doing the elliptical 30 minutes a day - 4 times a week. I literally was at the gym the day before Brody was born. Am I crazy or what? These huge body builder guys called me "Baby's Mama" and they couldn't believe I was still at the gym. Kind of funny.
Sidebar - I still gained the 45 pounds, but all but 10-15 pounds really did fall off right after (within about 2-3 months.) I was in great shape. I had that 9 lb 8 oz boy naturally and it was a great experience.
Ever since Brody was born though it has been really hard to get back. When we were in Vernal (3 months) I went to the gym pretty faithfully, but I didn't lose all the baby weight yet. Then we moved to Neola. There were gyms in Roosevelt, but not with child care. I bought a treadmill and some weights, but it was next to impossible to do it at home. I pretty much gave that up after 2 months. Besides I broke my foot and hurt (broke?) my tail bone.
So this is the first real gym I have been to in about 9 months. I really excited to get back in shape. I just love being by myself. I think that people think I am rude at the gym for not talking to them or making friends, but that is not why I am there. I am there to be by myself. It's the only time of day I don't have someone needing something from me. I can just let my thoughts wander. I can watch the news. I can read gossip magazines. I love it!
So Mr. Gym Devil - I will be back tomorrow. I will even the score!
So yesterday I take the kids in and Brody is crying and will not stop. I guess crying is an understatement, because I could still hear him all the way across the gym and the kids room door was shut.

Poem(s) of the Day
I am doing home school preschool for Collin this week and I found a few kids poem books. This poem is from "For Laughing Out Loud : Poems to Tickle Your Funny Bone." They are all kids funny and sometimes irreverant poems. Collin loves it. Here is one of my fav's:
The Parent
Children aren't happy with nothing to ignore,
And that's what parents were created for.
~Ogden Nash
And this one was making Collin crack up. We had to read it over and over.
I Wish I Had a Nickel
I wish I had a nickel,
I wish I had a dime,
I wish I had a boyfriend
Who kissed me all the time.
My momma took my nickel,
My daddy took my dime,
My sister took my boyfriend
And gave me Frankenstein.
He made me wash the windows,
He made me wash the floor,
He made me wash his underwear
And he kicked me out the door.
~Anonymous
I am sure that you could guess that the "underwear" part was his favorite. Enjoy!

Kahului Flea Market
So we went to the local flea market this morning. I wasn't sure what to expect. I thought it might only be a huge tourist trap with overpriced souvenirs, but I was pleasantly surprise that there were a lot of good deals on more than just key chains and postcards (although there were a lot of touristy things too.)
There were a lot of normal things that you would find at any flea market: jewelry, knock off purses, tshirts, etc.
A lot of the jewelry was being assembled right there on site. Very beautiful.
These are wood carved fish and whales. I just thought they looked interesting.
These little coconut guys were actually incense burners. The incense smoke came out the mouths. A lot of people were selling incense, probably because there are a lot of pot heads around here. :)
There was a huge selection of fresh flowers. Exotic, tropical, and very beautiful. I think that I am going to pick some of these up next time. What is it about fresh flowers? I just wish that I could afford to have them in my house all the time.

Oh the Places You'll Go!
Every time we move people ask us where we are from. For normal people this is an easy answer. But for me it's a whole different story. I could say where we lived last, where we went to high school, or where our cars are registered and our mail goes. Yes all three of those are different. From time to time I like to count how many places we have actually lived since we got married. Here is the full list. It's mostly in order, but things get a little fuzzy when you only live in a place for a couple months. Here goes:
1. Grand Meadow, Minnesota
2. West Jordan, Utah
3. Prescott Valley, Arizona
4. Talani Lake, Arizona
5. Glen Burnie, Maryland
6. Idaho Falls, Idaho
7. Gainesville, Texas
8. Albuquerque, New Mexico
9. Alton, Illinois
10. Hermosa, South Dakota
11. Augusta, Georgia
12. La Salle, Illinois
13. Gainesville, Texas (again)
14. 2-4 weeks each in the following New Mexico towns : Truth or Consequences, Santa Rosa, Tularosa, Albuquerque, and Gallup.
15. Maumee, Ohio
16. Pueblo, Colorado
17. Vernal, Utah
18. Neola, Utah
19. Kihei, Hawaii
I also went to Livingston, Montana and Star Valley, Wyoming for a week or two each, but that doesn't really count.
My married life has been an adventure and has really kept me on my toes. I have seen a lot of awesome things all over the country and I have met a lot of amazing people. I don't have a house of my own or a "normal" life, but who is normal anyway?!??

Beach Body
So when I think of Hawaii I think about beautiful sunsets, luaus, leis, waterfalls, and gorgeous tan skinned people. Well you can find all those things except the last one. Don't get me wrong - there are some native Hawaiians and Tongans with that envied tan skin, but you don't see many of them at the beach.
I can spot a tourist a mile away! The population on the island is about 140,000 and there are at any given time approximately 80,000 tourists. Most of the tourists that go to "my beach" (the beach that's 2 blocks away) are at least 60+ years old! They are white and pasty or red from a sunburn. Being that old you have no shame. You just say to hell with it, I am going to scoop these boobs up and pour them into a bikini. They don't show you that on the brochure.
This one woman I will never forget. She actually had extremely tan skin, quite leathered and wrinkly. She was walking along the waters edge at a pretty slow pace, probably in part because she a had a little bit of hunch back. Her bathing suit had one of those tutus like you would wear when you were five. It was a bright yellow suit and I was trying as hard as I could to tell if it was one or two pieces. Finally as she got closer I could tell that it was 2 pieces, but you just couldn't see much skin between because of her hunched position. One of the most bizarre things I have ever seen.
That's all you see around here is really old people and a handful of newlyweds. There are no children on this island. The locals are made up of a lot of retired people and a lot of hippie-like single people. There are also the Tongans who actually have pretty big families. I think they are they only supply of children on the island.
For those of you who have seen Chitty Chitty Bang Bang I liken it to that. We live in "Bulgaria" and children are not allowed. Anywhere I go I can pretty much count on having the only children there, Costco, grocery shopping, even the beach. It's really weird. At least we have church. You can always count on Mormons to have kids. :)
Maui has been really interesting so far. We are still in our tourist phase so everything is new and exciting. Every weekend we are trying to see all the sights. A lot of adventures are not kid friendly, but we have had our share of fun though. I will keep you posted with all our crazy adventures. And if I can discretely take a pictures of a 70 year old couple in their bathing suits I will gladly share that with you!

I HATE Email Forwards!!
That being said here's a good one Lydia sent me today:
I was out walking with my 4 year old daughter. She picked up something off the ground and started to put it in her mouth. I took the item away from her and I asked her not to do that. "Why?" my daughter asked. "Because it's been on the ground, you don't know where it's been, it's dirty, and probably has germs," I replied.
At this point, my daughter looked at me with total admiration and asked, "Momma, how do you know all this stuff, you are so smart" I was thinking quickly. "All moms know this stuff. It's on the Mom Test. You have to know it, or they don't let you be a Mom."
We walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes, but she was evidently pondering this new information. "OH...I get it!" she beamed, "So if you don't pass the test you have to be the dad." ''Exactly," I replied back with a big smile on my face.

Stolen Art
According to Collin this is a piece of stolen art. It is actually a wooden bead that he found beneath the neighbors deck.
He gets his inspiration for calling it stolen art from a documentary that he watched with Darrell. It was about, obviously, stolen art and about people that steal extremely expensive and rare art for their own personal galleries.
I guess you never know what could be valuable and according to Collin he has something of extreme value. He has been carrying around this bead for about 3 days now.
Kids just crack me up.
UFO
This was flying around in my house. Easily larger than a quarter. Not your common house fly. It's like a cross between a spider and a fly. Look at the hair on those legs! I guess that's what I get for living in a tropical climate.
Collin said to me, "Mom! A bug is flying in the kitchen." Well he wasn't kidding. Imagine how surprised I was to find this little fella.
I just thought I would share some of the daily adventures of a stay at home mom. It's more interesting and entertaining than you would think! :)
Here goes nothing.....
